With the changes in education policy, India has started down the path of educational revolution. For higher educational institutions, this means promoting a more interdisciplinary approach in a bid to raise the standards of universities to match the global scale. The so-far rigidly held boundaries are rightly collapsing, creating a far more inclusive environment. For an institution like MIT School of Humanities, a constituency unit of MIT Art Design & Technology University, Pune which has incorporated this approach in its vision itself, this is confirmation that it is the right path to a bright future.
It has quickly become a much sought-after Institute for the unique degree programmes that it offers. It is one of the handful of colleges in India that offers a B.A. Honours in English, which is also its flagship programme. The course is divided into 6 semesters. Along with core subjects that offer more in-depth and critical knowledge of literature compared to a regular B.A. in English course, students can also choose from a wide range of interdisciplinary electives like psychology, anthropology, political science, mass communication and so on. A lot of thought has gone into the careful design of the syllabus which is at the core of the program. The unique aspect of the syllabus is the inclusion of world literature in English instead of the traditional English (or rather British) literature. This inclusion is something that even some of the more advanced and more reputed courses struggle with. This awareness of world-class literature in English from countries other than just England and America is a unique and exemplary feature of the programme. The associated activities, assignments are all designed to elicit intelligent and honest responses from students.
Additionally, the bracketed specialization in English Language and Literature Teaching (ELLT) at the Master’s level is a rare and in-demand course that several English literature and language enthusiasts all over the country aim to pursue post their Bachelor’s. The programme provides postgraduate-level study in a number of important areas of current theory and practice in applied linguistics, language & literature teaching. It provides English teaching professionals with a route to advanced knowledge and skills in the English language & literature curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. It also gives students the opportunity to update their knowledge in a flexible and supported learning environment. This Master's programme is the only one in Pune with an exclusive focus on 'teaching' encompassing the areas of both Language & Literature and is aimed at practicing teaching as a form of continued professional development.
The course will open up exciting and stimulating career opportunities, both nationally and internationally, as a teacher of English or as someone who will shape the future of English language teaching.
While trying to enquire about their PhD (English) programme, we learnt that their seats were already full, which reiterates how MIT SoH has become the preference for students and English language and literature professionals alike.
The School of Humanities (SoH) is second to none when it comes to training students not only in core subjects related to language and literature but also in transforming students into well rounded personalities. With the aid of MIT School of Holistic Development, it gives students the liberty to choose from interdisciplinary and pragmatic fields such as music, dance, gymnasium, yoga, communication skills as well as foreign language courses in German, French, Japanese and Spanish. It is also a Cambridge Assessment Centre, one of the only two centres in Maharashtra, which offers ‘Linguaskill’, an add-on course on par with IELTS, for all students at SoH. Undoubtedly, MIT SoH is the paradigm of this new approach towards teaching-learning, curriculum designing and delivery.
The state-of-the-art infrastructure, well-furnished and equipped classrooms and the upcoming language lab are beyond comparison.
With the University having established tie-ups and MoUs with several well-known international institutes and firms, students graduating from MIT School of Humanities are bound to be successful professionals with an edge over others!
