Swachhata Pakhwada CLEANLINESS, HYGIENE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Introduction

Within my neighbourhood, there is a well-kept park where I frequently observe kids having fun.

The pathways are clear, the grass is recently cut, and the garbage cans are consistently emptied.

This small deed of cleaning has a big impact on the neighbourhood. It makes the neighbourhood

more enjoyable and gives the locals a sense of pride.

Maintaining cleanliness is crucial to our general health and wellbeing. We are more content and

at ease in neat surroundings. People tend to be more engaged and productive in clean

workplaces, according to studies. Have you ever noticed how overwhelming a cluttered

environment can be?

Hygiene: A Personal Responsibility

Maintaining good hygiene is not just an individual choice; it has social implications too. Each of

us has a role to play in ensuring that we live in a clean environment. We must clean the mess in our

surroundings regularly. Try your best to avoid plastic bags and littering around by throwing garbage

carelessly. It is essential to effectively dispose of waste and wastewater. Most importantly, adopt

reusing and recycling techniques to monitor pollution levels. Thus, we must practice all this and more

to ensure cleanliness.

Let’s consider the example of community initiatives. Many local groups organize cleanliness

drives, encouraging residents to clean up local parks, streets, or even beaches. During one such

event, I felt a strong sense of community spirit as neighbours, strangers, and friends came together

for a common goal. It was heartwarming to see how collective actions contribute to a cleaner

environment.

Kitchen hygiene is also important. Keeping our hands and kitchen surfaces clean when cooking

contributes to the prevention of foodborne infections. Furthermore, maintaining the cleanliness of

our living areas and bathrooms not only prevents the growth of germs but also improves the

appearance of our houses. Everyone feels more at ease and welcome in a tidy home.

Impact on Society: Beyond Cleanliness

A clean environment has cascading effects on society. It enhances the quality of life for everyone.

It encourages outdoor activities, boosts morale, and invites tourism. Just think about the beautiful

gardens and well-kept public spaces that attract visitors to our cities!

Additionally, when areas are clean, crime rates tend to drop. A tidy environment usually indicates

that people take pride in their community and are more likely to look out for each other. This

connection between cleanliness and safety highlights the importance of not only keeping our own

spaces clean but also encouraging others in our neighbourhoods to do the same.

Sustainability of the environment is another factor that is closely related to hygiene and cleanliness.

We safeguard the environment when we manage garbage properly and maintain a clean

environment. It lessens the negative consequences of pollution. For example, we greatly reduce

the amount of waste in landfills when we separate our waste and recycle goods like paper and

plastic.

The more we promote cleanliness, the more detrimental our actions are to the environment.

Whether it's bringing reusable bags into the world, conserving water, or choosing environmentally

friendly items, every tiny action counts. Our decisions have a knock-on impact that can encourage

others to make similar decisions, fostering societies where sustainability and hygiene are valued

highly.

Community initiatives:

The Swatchh Bharat Mission, launched by the government of India, aims to clean up the streets ,

roads and infrastructure of cities and the rural areas. This initiative highlights the importance of

cleanliness and sanitation in promoting public health. Community involvement is essential as

residents who engage in cleanliness drives participate actively in upkeep.

Other initiatives like - Swachh Survekshan, Clean Coasts Initiative, Plogging India, Waste

Warriors , etc. must be encouraged too.

Conclusion

Cleanliness and hygiene are not merely personal preferences; they are essential components of a

thriving society. By taking small steps in our households and communities, we can create a positive

environment for ourselves and future generations. Some common practices can be followed by

every person in society and world can surely become a better place. Practices like - Composting

at Home, Reducing Plastic Use, Avoiding Littering, Personal Hygiene, Public Dustbins and

Promoting Green Spaces should be followed.

Let’s come together to support initiatives that promote cleanliness and environmental

sustainability. Remember, every effort counts, and together, we can make our neighbourhoods and,

ultimately, our world a better place.
