The much-anticipated India-Japan Fusion Fashion Show, a landmark event celebrating the rich traditions of both India and Japan, is set to take place on 3rd October 2024, at the prestigious MIT-ADT University, Pune. To be held at 2:00 PM, the one and a half hour event will bring to life the timeless elegance of traditional Indian and Japanese garments, combined with a modern, sustainable twist.
This unique fashion show, themed "Conserve the Tradition, Revive the Elegance," will showcase an extraordinary fusion of Indian sarees and Japanese kimonos, symbolizing the harmony between two great cultures. The event has been organized under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Mangesh Karad, Executive President and Vice-Chancellor and will jointly be hosted by MIT School of Holistic Development and MIT Institute of Design. Ms. Kazuko Barisic, a renowned Japanese traditional artist and expert in both sarees and kimonos, will present her exclusive collection of handmade sarees crafted from old and recycled kimono fabrics, many of which are pure silk. These designs blend the intricate beauty of Japanese textiles with the classic allure of Indian sartorial heritage, exploring Japanese artistry and insights into the cultural connections between India and Japan. The event will be facilitated by Mr. Tomio Isogai, a consultant in Indo-Japanese relations and the Deputy Chair of the Kansai Japan India Cultural Society, Kobe - Japan, who will also conduct a masterclass session on Career Opportunities in Japan.
“At this fashion show, we aim to inspire the audience to appreciate the elegance and cultural significance of our traditional garments, such as sarees, kurtas, and kimonos,” said Ms. Barisic. She further mentioned, “Our goal is not just to celebrate tradition but also to promote sustainability by reusing and recycling fabrics that have been passed down through generations.”
The India-Japan Fusion Fashion Show emphasizes preserving cultural traditions while embracing modern values such as sustainability. The event will feature sarees made from traditional Indian designs merged with recycled kimono fabrics, reflecting the intricate beauty and craftsmanship of both cultures. Some pieces will feature original Indian saree designs with Japanese elements, creating a distinctive fusion that is both unique and elegant.
