Program Overview:

India’s agri and food business sector stands as one of the nation’s most dynamic and fast-evolving industries, contributing significantly to economic growth and employment. The food processing sector alone is projected to reach US $535 billion by FY 2025–26, highlighting its immense growth potential. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the sector is expected to expand even further—touching US $700 billion by 2030, US $1,100 billion by 2035, and crossing US $2,150 billion by 2047, reflecting India’s long-term vision for a robust agri-food economy.

The food processing industry currently contributes about 7.7% of India’s total manufacturing output and nearly 10–11% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) within the agriculture sector. In 2024, the Indian food processing market was valued at approximately INR 30.5 lakh crore (US $354.5 billion) and is projected to nearly double to INR 65.2 lakh crore (US $758.4 billion) by 2028. This growth is supported by favorable policies, expanding infrastructure, and rising domestic and export demand.

Employment generation remains one of the sector’s strongest contributions. Around 1.93 million people are employed in registered food processing units, while an additional 5.1 million work in unregistered and informal units, making it one of India’s largest job-creating industries. In terms of agricultural production, India achieved record highs in 2023–24, with milk production reaching 236.35 million tonnes and Kharif foodgrain output estimated at 164.7 million tonnes in 2024–25. The industry’s steady expansion is reflected in its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5–8%, depending on the segment. The agriculture and allied sectors are also expected to grow by around 3–4% annually in FY 2024–25. On the trade front, the food processing sector contributes about 13% of India’s total exports, with Indian agricultural, horticultural, and processed food products reaching over 100 countries worldwide.

To support this momentum, India has developed a strong policy and infrastructure framework. As of mid-2024, the country boasts 41 Mega Food Parks, 399 cold-chain projects, 76 agro-processing clusters, and 588 food processing units approved under various government schemes. These initiatives not only strengthen the supply chain but also promote rural entrepreneurship and private investment in value addition.

Overall, the agri and food business sector is emerging as a pillar of sustainable economic development, offering immense opportunities for skilled professionals and entrepreneurs trained in management, technology, and innovation.
